The state of the field
You want to know how your site is doing. So you reach for what’s available, and you run into the same set of trade-offs everyone else does.
Google Analytics is free, but it costs you a cookie banner, your visitors’ privacy, and the small ongoing indignity of working for an advertising company in exchange for some pageview counts.
Cloud privacy analytics (Plausible, Fathom, Umami Cloud) treat people better — but you’re still sending every visitor to a third-party server, paying €10–30 a month, and renting access to your own data.
Self-hosted analytics (Matomo, Umami, Plausible CE) are free and private, but they want a VPS, a Postgres database, and some Docker knowledge. Most websites can’t, or won’t, run that.

What’s different
Crumbless runs on the same hosting your website already does. Your visitors hit your domain; your server records the hit; your dashboard reads from your database. No SaaS in the middle. No vendor with a copy of your audience. No data export, because there’s nowhere for it to go.
If your hosting provider goes down, so does your analytics. If your hosting provider stays up, so does your analytics. That’s the entire dependency chain.
Compliance
Crumbless identifies returning visitors with a 24-hour rotating hash that’s destroyed at midnight UTC. The previous day’s data can’t be linked to the next day’s. There’s nothing to consent to because nothing personal is stored.
This approach has been blessed by France’s CNIL, Spain’s AEPD, and Germany’s DSK as a way to do analytics without a banner. Your conversion rate will thank you.

PHP 8.1+. SQLite. No Composer access required, no Node.js, no Docker, no Postgres. The whole thing is a .zip you upload and a script tag you paste. If you can install WordPress, you can install Crumbless.
